Most of you can’t even buy my favorite laptop of 2023 — you’re missing out

Let’s talk about the Huawei MateBook X Pro — arguably one of the best laptops of the year that (most of) you can’t even buy. But U.S. sales restrictions be damned, it’s an incredible system through and through, and I feel like rubbing it in a little. Why do I say this? Well, it comes down to three things: the visually striking design, its impressive usability and performance for an ultrabook, and that touchpad.

The Visually Striking Design

The MateBook X Pro boasts a drop dead gorgeous matte finish in Ink Blue — just the right shade of my favorite color that doesn’t look too bright and not basically black. The smooth CNC-milled magnesium alloy is graced by a soft touch coating, resistant to scuffs and fingerprints. Open it up and you’ll find a 14.2-inch LTPS display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a 2K resolution.

The colors are mightily impressive, the contrast ratio paired with HDR makes for a ton of depth to each picture that is unheard of in LCD technology, and everything feels buttery smooth with a 90Hz refresh rate. Sure, it has some flaws, including heating up quickly, a subpar webcam, and a restricted port array, but these fade into the background compared to its outstanding features.

Impressive Usability and Performance

When it comes to a good keyboard and touchpad, the Huawei MateBook X Pro takes the lead. The 1.5mm of travel chiclet keyboard has a great soft landing design, perfect for forceful typists. The massive touchpad offers multi-touch gestures and a smooth surface, with haptic motor providing a satisfying tactile sensation to every click. Huawei has pulled an absolute blinder here and implemented system controls into the edges of the touchpad itself.

Currently, the MateBook X Pro sports an Intel Core i7-1370P, 16GB of LPDDR5, and a 1TB SSD. It’s a small spec bump over last year’s model, but it does make for an impressive upgrade over the previous version. The X Pro excels at handling essential tasks while managing some of the more intensive tasks with relative ease.

Looking Into the Future

Huawei should consider releasing a new version of the MateBook X Pro to stay competitive in the ever-evolving laptop market, especially considering the advancements in chipsets and performance with the arrival of Meteor Lake. Despite the U.S. sales restrictions, the MateBook X Pro continues to be a sought-after device with its outstanding design, usability, and performance, making it a frequently-discussed topic in the tech world.

It’s a shame that many consumers are unable to experience the brilliance of the MateBook X Pro due to regional limitations, but its impact on the industry and the excitement it generates cannot be ignored. As technology enthusiasts and consumers await potential updates and revisions, the MateBook X Pro remains a symbol of innovation and excellence in the laptop landscape.
